For those who have had a previous cesarean, the decision to birth naturally or have a repeat cesarean birth is a very personal one. Many parents do not know that a natural birth after cesarean is possible or they live in an area where hospital trial of labor after cesarean is not an option. The 2017 American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists guidelines state that attempting a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is a safe and appropriate choice for most women who have had a prior cesarean delivery, including for some women who have had two previous cesareans. Montana state law has provisions for midwife attendance at a Home Vaginal Birth After Cesarean under rule number 24.111.612 of the Statues and Rules Relating to Direct-Entry Midwives.
There are many reasons to consider a trial of labor after cesarean. Beginning labor on your own ensures that your body and baby are prepared for birth, it reduces the risk of preterm delivery and complications that lead to extended hospital stays. Birthing naturally usually means you’ll experience less pain, a shorter recovery time, and have an easier time nursing and caring for their baby. If you plan to have more children, having a VBAC reduces the risk of placental and other problems that can occur with repeat cesareans.
Many factors play a role in VBAC success, but the scientific literature agrees that between 70-90% of VBAC attempts result in a successful vaginal birth. It is important to approach the possibility of Home VBAC on an individual basis, for this reason we will set up an initial consultation to discuss your unique situation and options.
