Many cultures around the world value the use of water during labor. In recent times, water baths have been coined “nature’s epidural”. There is a reason why so many gravitate toward the bath during labor. It eases pain, it is calming, it creates a sense of being weightless and being held at the same time. Submersion in a tub allows you to move more freely, changing position as you feel necessary to help the birth along. It also reduces trauma to the perineal tissues and provides the baby with a gentle transition from the watery world of the womb.
In the community that I serve, about 80% of clients will use water at some time during labor, usually as a shower or bath. Many will decide to stay or get into a water tub to birth. Some have bath tubs at home that are big enough, others will buy or rent an inflatable tub specifically for the birth. If interested, clients are encouraged to explore waterbirth through books, websites and videos. We can discuss your particular questions as well as details about needed supplies and set up during prenatal visits.
